SRC / VHF MARINE RADIO OPERATOR COURSE INFO

What is the SRC VHF license?

The short range certificate SRC / very high frequency VHF radios are the radios used in the marine world. Src and Vhf is the same thing. Most boats will have a marine vhf radio and it is a legal requirement to hold an operators license to use a radio. 

How do I get a Vhf radio license?

You can obtain a vhf radio operators license by 2 methods:

  1. complete our online src interactive course. 
  2. Attend one of our classroom src vhf courses in Glasgow.

How long does the course take?

The online course will take around 6 – 8 hours to study and complete. 

The classroom course takes around 7 hours to complete, we post you out the vhf hand book prior to the course for some self study before the course. 

Do I need to sit an exam?

Yes. After you complete the online src vhf course or the classroom src vhf then you will be ready to take the src exam. 

The src vhf exam consists of a 30 minute written paper then a 30 minute practical exam by one of our src vhf assessors in Glasgow. 

Is the exam difficult?

The src exam is straight forward and we will prepare you 100% for the exam so you are confident and ready to take the SRC exam. 

Do I need a Vhf license?

Yes. You legally need a src / vhf operators license to operate a marine src / vhf radio. The course will teach you vital safety features as how to broadcast a mayday or distress message, but equally important teaches you the correct actions and procedures if you are required to assist another vessel or to speak to the coastguard on the vhf radio. The Src course will also teach you proper radio etiquette and how to speak to marinas, other boats and the coastguard without sounding like an idiot! The course also covers Basics of radio operation, frequencies, distress, emergency and medical assistance procedures, making ship to shore telephone calls, Digital Selective Calling, Global Maritime Distress Safety System

How long does the src / vhf license last for?

Once obtained the src vhf photo license does not expire and lasts for life. 

When will I receive my license after the course? 

Once you have passed the exam we will send the application away on your behalf. Approximate return times is around 4-6 weeks for your src vhf photo License to be posted to your address. If you require it in a hurry there is a fast track service offered by the Rya which takes around a week but costs more.

Is there a minimum age?

The minimum age to sit the exam is 16 years old.

You will also need a ships radio license for your boat. This is free to get and you can apply for it here: https://www.ofcom.org.uk/manage-your-licence/radiocommunication-licences/ships-radio                    

Licensing ensures that radio equipment used on board ships does not cause undue interference to other communications equipment and is operated by competent persons.
